Kirsten Romances 'Spider-Man'
A red-headed KIRSTEN DUNST returns for more web-slinging action and
romance in 'Spider-Man 2,' in theaters June 30. Tonight on ET, we're
with Kirsten to get her take on her super summer juggernaut!
"There's more at stake and it's more developed now," Kirsten tells
ET about the sequel to one of the highest-grossing films of all
time, adding, "At the heart of it, it's really a romance."
Kirsten, who signed up for three 'Spider-Man' movies, says she's
happy that her character has grown up a lot since the last film and
that she's "really taking control" of her relationship with TOBEY
MAGUIRE's character, Peter Parker.
"I like that even his powers are affected by their love," she
says. "I think that's beautiful."
In the amazing sequel, Peter tries not to have a nervous breakdown
as he juggles multiple jobs, college, friends, family, love with
Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten) and chases down criminals as a superhuman
crime fighter in the name of justice.
"Even though they have the history, they don't really have any
relationship at all," says Kirsten about her character's connection
with Tobey's. "He's kind of constantly avoiding her and he doesn't
have the social capabilities to articulate or share his feelings
because he's preoccupied with what he does."
Just when Peter is ready to give up from Spider-sensory overload, a
new nemesis emerges in the form of Dr. Otto Octavius ('Frida' star
ALFRED MOLINA), an evil genius who wreaks havoc as "Doc Ock," with
deadly, mechanical tentacles fused to his back. Faced with a problem
that's much bigger than his own and forced to rescue his true love,
Peter dons his costume once again for the ultimate face-off.
"At the end of the day, what matters are those intimate scenes that
kind of keep the movie together," says Kirsten. "It's nice that the
love story is what makes the movie."
Also starring JAMES FRANCO as Peter Parker's pal Harry Osborn and
J.K. SIMMONS as ornery Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson, 'Spider-
Man 2' swings into theaters June 30.
