KIRSTEN DUNST TALKS ABOUT ORLANDO
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Tobey Maguire's back injury on the set of Seabiscuit nearly cost him his Spidey mask. Now art imitates life in Spider-Man 2, opening next Wednesday, when Peter Parker (Maguire) forfeits his superpowers and ends up falling from a building, suffering a painfully hard blow to his back. Ouch!
But at Tuesday night's premiere, everyone was just glad to have Maguire back where he belongs.
"Fortunately, the family stayed together, and I think that's good for the movie," producer Laura Ziskin said, beaming.
Twenty feet above the red carpet, a spider web stretched the length of two adjacent Westwood movie houses showcasing the film. A blowout bash was held 15 minutes away at the Pacific Park amusement park on the Santa Monica Pier, where a King Kong-like inflatable Spider-Man clung to the side of a roller coaster.
Alfred Molina, the film's villainous, multi-limbed Dr. Octopus, couldn't keep his two hands off the fried calamari.
"I like my calamari fried with a lot of onions and lemon juice, or grilled with a little bit of white wine and herbs," said Molina, who also has been deriving great pleasure from baskets of fruit arriving monthly on his doorstep. "(Director) Sam (Raimi) and Tobey bought me a subscription to the Fruit of the Month Club, so every month I get a big bag of whatever seasonal fruit is available. Last month it was mangoes."
Raimi told us he's "a member in good standing" of the California Rare Fruit Growers Society. Who knew?
With her boyfriend, Jake Gyllenhaal, off shooting the gay cowboy flick Brokeback Mountain, Kirsten Dunst — looking very "flapper" in Christian Lacroix — danced under the stars, sharing cigarettes with her gal pals. She has just started rehearsals on Elizabethtown with co-star Orlando Bloom and says the two already have found a connection: "We talk about how (messed) up both our families are," Dunst said and quickly added with a guffaw, "Just joking."
While Dunst danced, Maguire chatted up her new on-screen love interest, Kiwiactor Daniel Gillies, who came with his real-life fiancée, Rachael Leigh Cook. Gillies and Cook will marry in late August in "a very small; intimate ceremony," Gillies said. "Rachael's not a princess; she just wants to be married."
Next week, Avi Arad, producer of all films Marvel, is expected to announce the full cast of his Fantastic Four film, with Emmy-winning actor Michael Chiklis of The Shield a strong contender for The Thing.
"Chiklis is tough and rugged, yet he has a likable quality — and that's The Thing," Spidey/Fantastic Four creator Stan Lee said. The Notebook's Rachel McAdams is emerging as a likely choice to play Sue Storm.
"She'd be great," Arad hinted. "We like her a lot."
